Measuring Units and Conversions

Commonly used measuring units, when talking about food, fall into 3 categories - Volume, Weight and Discrete units. The tables below list out conversions between measuring units within a category. Converting from one category to another depends on the food item and this information is found on each food items page.

Volume measurements are the most commonly used measurements in a kitchen - a cup, 2 tablespoons, 100 ml are all volume measures. The table below lists out the standard measure equivalent in milliliters (ml) and conversions from one commonly used measure to another.

cup fl oz glass l ml pinch tbsp tsp

1 fl oz 0.15 1 0.12 0.03 29.57 29.57 1.48 5.91
1 glass 1.2 8.12 1 0.24 240 240 12 48

100 ml 0.5 3.38 0.42 0.1 100 100 5 20
1 pinch 0 0.03 0 0 1 1 0.05 0.2

1 tsp 0.02 0.17 0.02 0 5 5 0.25 1

Weight measures are often found on packaged foods and are also used in recipes though somewhat less often than volume measures.

g lb oz
100 g 100 0.22 3.53
1 lb 454 1 16.01
1 oz 28.35 0.06 1

Discrete measures are based on 'per piece' or 'per item'. Some commonly used discrete measures are piece, slice, filet, can etc. Strfri supports the listed discrete measures and also defaults unknown measures to a 'serving' - the standard or default discrete measure. Conversions between discreete measures are difficult but 1 discrete unit, of any of the units, is equivalent to 1 serving by default.
